Concepts of Death

“She may not have been able to verbally express that her father had passed, but you could see it in things that she did.” (Special Ed Teacher)

The death of someone close can deeply affect children of all ages and abilities. Grieving students are better able to cope with a loss when they have a basic understanding about what death is. This module outlines four concepts about death that are important for children experiencing grief to understand. Teachers and other education professionals familiar with these concepts will be able to understand more about the experiences and behaviors of grieving students. They can also use the information to advise parents seeking advice on how to best support their children.
